Dance Like Nobody's Watching

This is my first blog post in quite a while. When you get out of the habit of writing it is difficult to get going again. I guess that is true with most things.

The past few decades gave us a couple of songs that came to mind this morning. As I drove home yesterday I noticed in my rearview mirror the young lady in the car behind me. She was singing with whatever music was playing in her car. I love music. I love to sing. It always seems to dampen the enthusiasm when we realize someone is watching.

Lee Ann Womack had a hit back in 2000 called “I Hope You Dance”. It starts out:

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep your hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed

The hook of the song comes with this line: And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance … I hope you dance, I hope you dance!!

Apparently the young lady behind me yesterday had heard the song “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching.” The lyrics of the song have unclear origin and attributed to many. That doesn’t diminish their impact. It goes something like this:

            Dance like nobody’s watching
Love like you’ve never been hurt
            Sing like nobody’s listening
Live like it’s heaven on earth

Children do this all the time. I believe that’s one of the things Jesus implied when He said, “Anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Little children are curious. They trust completely. They love fully. They play with nothing held back. Oh, if we could only find that place again. I do not believe these are the “childish things” that Paul intended to be “put away” when we mature in Christ.

The prime example of this is given in the story of the woman of Bethany that came to the home of Simon the Leper while Jesus was there. She was described as a “sinful woman.” Footnote here: We all are sinful! She was not an invited guest but she had an unquenchable desire to see Jesus. She brought with her a box, or bottle, of expensive perfume. When she saw Jesus, she broke the container open and poured the fragrance on Him. This was her worship!

She did not care that she was a “sinner”, or uninvited. She only knew one thing: if she could get to Jesus she would bless Him the best way she knew how. She gave the most precious thing she had. For her, this was “living like it’s heaven on earth.” I don’t know if she knew that it literally was heaven come to earth, but she was drawn to Jesus because He embodied everything that she desired: unqualified love, complete forgiveness, and total acceptance.

That’s really what all of us want, but we know others are watching or listening. We have been hurt. Until we can find a way to let God heal the hurt we will never find the freedom to worship Him with abandon. Oh, how I wish we could.

Better Than I Deserve

A radio talk show host has made famous a phrase now used by many. When asked, “How are you?”, they respond with, “Better than I deserve.” On the surface this sound rather noble and altruistic. The reality is, for the Christian, it is part of what is keeping the Church hamstrung and off mission.

Here is the truth. You deserve to die. Therefore anything short of death is better than you deserve. The reason Jesus came and gave His life in exchange for yours is so you can have His life. Scripture calls it abundant life. The Greek word is “zoe”, which means, “life and plenty of it.” That is much better than you deserveD (capital D for emphasis), but because of Jesus (for the Christian) you now deserve the life of a child of God. That life is full of joy, peace, longsuffering, healing, provision, strength, passion, and this list goes on and on.

If you are still living at the doorway into the Kingdom (where many Christians live) then you keep the mindset of “better than I deserve.” That is not humility at all. It is actually pride disguised as humility. You are actually boasting about the fact that God is not faithful to His promise to give you the abundant life that He promised.

Look at few folks in the Bible that knew a thing or two about the God they served. Adam named all the animals that God created. Noah built a boat before rain was invented, in a desert, in order to preserve the human race. Abraham believed what God said before it was a thing. It’s called faith. David learned the ways of God as a shepherd, then led armies against the enemies of Israel and united the kingdom under his reign. Moses went before pharaoh to free the nation of Israel from captivity. The prophets spoke forth that which they heard from an invisible God and brought things into sight for all to see.

John the Baptist declared he was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, preparing the path for the Anointed One that would come after him. Paul forsook everything he knew about God to embrace that which he had only encountered briefly on the Damascus road. John wrote a vision after being banished to an island to die.

All of these, and many, many more, knew who they were. What if any one of them had said, “I’m better off than I deserve.” Thank God, they didn’t. If you are a Christian, wake up and realize that “you are much more than you have become.” (Lion King) You don’t have to settle for scraps at the threshold of the Kingdom. Step inside and learn about the life that has been provided for you through the sacrifice of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Psalm 1 – a poem

Psalm 1 – a poem

Where can I find a place to call home?
My feet always wanting to roam
Down a path that takes me to strange places.

Who can I look to for peace, for hope?
My mind always tugging the rope
Pulled on by people with plans of their own

The only hope of home I can find
My heart holds to One of a kind
He leads me to where the fresh water flows

The good, the bad, I don’t know which one
Both vie for their place in the sun
I must choose to die so that He may live

Buried in the rich soil of His grace
I find there is no better place
For I live as one dead to my own will

Though dead, still living by Grace alone
So His fruit can be born in me
More alive after dying than ever

Foundations

One of the more intriguing verses in the Bible is Psalm 11:3, “… if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” When I first heard this verse as a young man it gave me great pause. I began meditating on the implications, which, if taken to the extreme, could cause fear to rise up in your heart. Other verses came to mind like, “If God is for us who can be against us?” The inverse of that would be, “If God is not for you there is no hope.”

It is this type of thing that causes people to fall into great depression and fear. Others begin to lash out in anger at what they feel is injustice. They shout, “Who is God that He would not be for me?!?” First of all, they do not understand the nature and character of God, and secondly do not understand scripture. Let’s look at this a little more closely.

I’m 58, but I have never seen the type of things going on in the world that are happening today. I’m sure others have, and possibly in history much worse things have transpired. But in my lifetime this is the most unusual. We have at our disposal the greatest amount of information ever amassed: the Internet. Just about anything you can imagine is available at your fingertips via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or even a watch! Yet, I have never seen such confusion. For most of us, we grew up with a worldview given to us by our parents, teachers, and preachers. Today, even from an early age, you can have access to any worldview that exists.

Knowledge can be dangerous. Knowledge without wisdom is like playing with bullets without a gun. Inside a gun bullets are safely housed in chambers where accidental firing is a minimal risk. Outside of a gun they are a danger. Knowledge (bullets) inside a gun (wisdom) can be fired at a target with great precision and accomplish the desired result. Outside of wisdom, knowledge may shoot any direction lacking the barrel to guide it, not only missing the desired target, but also potentially causing harm to innocents.

For many, knowledge is considered a “foundation” upon which we can build a structure with little risk of it ever crumbling. Modern science is this way. The main issue with knowledge is that it is always changing. We are constantly learning more about our world, and this new knowledge totally changes our previous understanding. Many theories have been developed about how earth, and the entire universe for that matter, came into being. Every day new information is obtained which totally refutes the knowledge from yesterday.

So, back to the topic at hand. If you base your life on knowledge alone it will most likely crumble over time. There has to be an absolute; bedrock. You have to get beyond the fluff and hype, especially in today’s world of “fake news” and straight out propaganda, and find truth. Once found, drive a stake in it so you cannot be blown from it, and you will not wander from it. Live your life from that place of truth. Look at the text again, this time in context.

Psalm 11:1-3 (ESV)
In the LORD I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, “Flee like a bird to your mountain, for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

“In the Lord I take refuge…” That is this psalmist’s bedrock. Then he continues, “How can you say to my soul …?” He is refuting others that say, “You better watch out! What if God doesn’t …?” For the psalmist there is no doubt that the Rock to whom he has attached himself cannot, and will not, be moved, destroyed, or in any way shaken. When you find this place in your relationship with God you, too, will be uneasily moved by anything that someone may say, or any knowledge that may present itself that is contrary to what you know to be true about God. If you are not there yet, keep digging. Once you get through the layers of junk, mistruth, deception, etc. you will find the unshakable Kingdom of Heaven!

Spiritual Growth

This chart has been on my desktop ever since I saw it for the first time. It depicts in very succinct fashion the cycle we go through in our spiritual journey. Right now you are in one of these four spiritual states. Unfortunately two of the states have as part of their description the word “unaware.” That is by far the most dangerous. The greatest problem of not knowing is that you don’t know. Let’s take a quick look at them.

1. Unaware and Uncommitted. I heard it said that there are three types of people in the world: those that make it happen, those that let it happen, and those that wonder what happened. This first group is worse than that. They are not even wondering what happened. Unaware. This is the state in which every human begins life. We are separated from God because of the sin-nature we inherited from Adam. We are certainly uncommitted because we do not even know there is a need for God in our life.

2. Unaware and Committed. Most people, in an effort to fit into their peer groups, begin to commit themselves to various things. Since they are still separated from God and don’t know it they begin to find fulfillment in social groups, political causes, activities (recreation, business, relationships, etc.), escape methods (drugs, alcohol, food, etc.), and some even commit themselves to spiritual pursuits (occult, new age, earth worship, etc.). All of this activity is simply an attempt to fill a void which they are not even fully aware exists.

3. Aware and Committed. Once the Holy Spirit begins to draw us toward Christ, we hear the Truth concerning Jesus and His love for us, we become Aware! When we respond to Him and allow the Love of Jesus to transform us, we become Committed. This is the state in which God desires for us to live our lives: fully aware of His Love, plans, and purpose, and fully committed to becoming like Jesus. It is in this state that we will experience the greatest peace, joy, happiness, contentment, fulfillment, excitement, and just about any other positive adjective or adverb you can imagine. This is living.

Sadly, there is a fourth state. Hebrews warns us of this place so that we can avoid ever entering into it.

4. Aware and Uncommitted. There is great debate and heated arguing that goes on between Believers about eternal security and “backsliding” (or falling away). I’ll leave that for the zealots and scholars. I do think, regardless of whether you become un-saved or not, there is a place that one can drift, usually unintentionally, where after being Aware and Committed, you become Aware and Uncommitted. You still know the Truth. You still know God and His love for you. You still know the plans and purpose that God has for you. But, you walk away, lay it down, let it fade, … or any number of other metaphors which imply a step back from the commitment you once had.

I honestly feel that Stage 1 is a better place to be than Stage 4. At least there you have the benefit of not knowing. You also have the potential for being enlightened and moving toward Stage 3 and fulfill your life in God. I alluded to this passage earlier, but look at these verses:

Hebrews 6:4-9 (ESV) For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.

Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.

I do not share this to cause you to fear, or have doubts about your salvation. However, we need to remain sober and guard our hearts to prevent us from ever falling away from what God has done for us through Jesus. When you continue to seek Him more than you do any other thing there is little danger that you will fall away. Let us purpose to live life Aware and Committed. We will find the best life available to us now, and in the one to come!

The Mind of Christ

The Mind of Christ

With all of the technology around us, we rarely, if ever, stop to think about how any of it works. Even things as simple as the light switch on our wall is taken for granted. The more complex technology like television, radio (satellite radio), computers, smartphones, etc., do not even give us pause to consider how they do what they do. We just take for granted that they work, and they will continue working, as long as they provide us the service that we desire.

But for just a moment I’d like you to think how truly simple these devices are. All of them, as a matter of fact, every digital device, when you boil it down, operate off of an electronic circuit known as a flip-flop. The flip-flop has one of two states: on or off. Typically this is represented by a positive electrical charge (on), or a negative electrical charge (off). For the purpose of communication we assign a numerical value of 0 (off) or 1 (on). This gives us a binary code that can then be used to represent strings of values, which give certain meanings, drive computers (a massive series of flip-flops) to do things for us like monitor our car engine’s fuel/oxygen mixture for optimum performance, or drive the robotic device used by a surgeon to perform tedious operations too delicate for just a human hand to accomplish.

These, and many, many more all come down to a 0 or a 1. Is the flip-flop on or off? The thing that triggered these thoughts was the television I was watching this afternoon. It happened to be a football game being played in San Diego, CA. There in the stadium were camera lenses connected to computers that turned the optics being captured into a digital stream of 1s and 0s. That stream was then translated into the broadcast format being sent (HD) that was beamed up to a satellite, downloaded to receivers across the globe, one of which was WHNT in Huntsville, AL. They in turn beamed the signal over to Florence where it was picked up by Comcast, merged into their signal being sent over the vast coax web that covers Lauderdale County, into my DVR, and displayed on my television.

If you understand how many 1s and 0s it takes to produce just one frame of HD on your television then you realize that is quite a feat. My television is displaying 1920 x 1080 resolution. That means it takes 2,073,600 pixels just to make one image. Normal HD is refreshed at, on the low end, 60 times per second up to 480 times per second. In one second of video content on my television, using the low end of 60Hz, it takes 124,416,000 pixels transmitted from the San Diego stadium to Robinhood Drive in Florence. I’ll save you the numbers, but a 3 hour football game takes a bunch of pixels.

Now realize that each pixel being displayed is not just a 0 or 1. It has to have additional information like color, intensity, etc. The number just keeps growing. And remember, these numbers represent what is being sent per second!!

“Why,” you may ask, “are you boring us with all of this?” I was contemplating the way we process information. It is much the same way as the computer. We receive information from our senses: smell, touch, sight, sound, and taste. We respond to each one of these as they signal to our brain (0 or 1, on or off) causing a reaction from us. Many times we respond out of habit, actually most times, because we know what a given stimulus means and what the usual outcome should be. For instance, when driving we see a traffic light change from green to yellow. Instinctively we press the brake to slow down (or stomp the accelerator to run through it!) because we have done it so many times until our brain responds without thinking. We feel cold so we put on warmer clothes or turn up the heat. We thirst so we get water.

These responses are the same as the computer being fed a string of data (0s and 1s) and it giving the output predetermined by its programming. In the example I gave at the beginning of this piece, at each step in the sequence there was a processor (computer) involved: in the camera, the image processor, satellite transmitter/receiver, broadcast transmitter/receiver, cable distribution, DVR, and the television itself. Make note of the word “programmed.”

The human brain is the most capable of all mammals. We can learn, recall, and reason better than all the animals. We can also invent, create, derive, and evaluate new circumstances quickly and formulate a plan or response to new stimuli within seconds. I promise all of this is going somewhere. We are created in the image of God. If you’re a Believer you have the Holy Spirit inside you that will help you.

The enemy attempts to get us off course from following after our Lord in any way possible. He tries to present stimuli for which we are not programmed. He will introduce what the Bible calls “schemes” in order to sideline us from experiencing God’s best. If you think of these as 0s and 1s it makes things a little more simple for us. For each stimulus we give a response. We act out of our past experience. This is why it is so critical for us to have a relationship with Christ, study His Word, and immerse ourselves in prayer so that we will have the Mind of Christ in us. Then, when stimulus comes we can see it through the eyes of the Lord, and it gives us a predisposition (programming) to respond as Jesus would.

By maintaining an open dialog with our Creator through prayer we can learn to recognize the schemes of the enemy so that we will not be duped by his attempts to draw us off course. Even unfamiliar data can be met with a proper response because we know the Truth that lives inside of us. The key to all of this is to keep things simple. When we start trying to take in all of the data at one time we get overwhelmed. This is when we tend to make poor decisions. We become more reactionary with our behavior instead on giving a purposeful response based on what we know to be true about God, His nature, His character, and His love for us.

We are just like the computer. A computer only has a single decision to make and any given time. Is it a 0 or a 1? As complex as our lives seem to be, we are, in any given moment, making a decision based on current stimuli. Our response will determine the eventual outcome.

Computers have what is called a “check bit” to ensure data integrity. It is derived from an algorithm using the value being transmitted. In our life, this is the Holy Spirit. He is constantly giving us information on what we encounter and our response to it. He will let us know when a proposed response is appropriate. Our challenge is to get sensitive enough to this prompting that we do not act until we know the Spirit’s answer.

The best part about all of this is that our God is the Master Programmer. He knows exactly how each of us is wired, what we are capable of producing, and gives us His Holy Spirit to help us carry out His thoughts and intents for our lives. “We are His workmanship.” (Ephesians 2:10) We are to become conformed to the image of Jesus (Romans 8:29). We do this by renewing our minds to think like Jesus. (Romans 12:2)

Paul put it like this in Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV) Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus …
